James Pyne, professor of clarinet at the Ohio State University, began his performance career at the age of 18 when Josef Krips invited him to
become a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded as principal
clarinet with Buffalo under conductors Lukas Foss, Michael Tilson Thomas, Julius Rudel and
Semyon Bychkov and was featured frequently as soloist. His faculty appointments have
included the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Michigan, the SUNY at Buffalo
and the SUNY at Fredonia. Pyne has collaborated with many of the world's leading
clarinetists in the design and preparation of hand-crafted mouthpieces. This has led
to research using sophisticated computer programs for real-time timbre analysis involving
the visualization and measurement of sound spectral characteristics. As a member of
Ohio State University's Center for Cognitive Science, as well as the technical committee
for musical acoustics of the Acoustical Society of America, this work has been expanded to
examine the unique characteristics of musical sound in a more general way, integrating
both physical and psychoacoustical factors important in our perception. He earned
the BFA in performance and music education at the University of Buffalo, and the MM in
performance and literature at the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Stanley
Hasty. His lectures, master classes, mouthpiece clinics and recitals have been
featured at numerous major universities and conservatories as well as many international
symposia.
